English

Reliability and availability are among the most important characteristics of components and systems, and continuous efforts have been directed toward their improvement and enhancement. This is because reliability and availability are inversely related to the failure rate: the higher the reliability and availability, the lower the failure rate. The electrical energy distribution system constitutes one of the principal systems of a vessel, responsible for supplying electrical energy to the entire vessel and to energy-consuming loads such as propulsion systems, command-and-control systems, surveillance systems, and auxiliary systems. Distribution switchboards are among the main components of the electrical energy distribution system. Accordingly, in the present study a bi-objective model has been developed for the simultaneous optimization of availability and cost in a vessel electrical energy distribution system that employs mixed redundancy. To this end, the system behavior is first simulated by means of a Markov chain and a phase-type distribution, and the problem is examined under a load-sharing regime. Consequently, the failure of one component affects the failure rates of the remaining components within the subsystem and thereby elevates those rates. A single repairman is considered for the restoration of failed components, and a maintenance-and-vacation policy is adopted for the repairman in order to repair the failed units. The problem is solved by the meta-heuristic algorithms NSGA-II and MOAHA under a mixed-redundancy strategy. The results of the study identify the optimal combination of type and number of electrical distribution switchboards in each subsystem of the vessel electrical energy distribution system while taking load-sharing effects into account, thereby yielding an increase in system availability and a reduction in costs.
